Pool surrounds
Decking, paving, coping and screening around a pool. Every one is different, so every one is priced to the space rather than off a standard rate.
What it costs
A pool surround is not one job. It is an assembly of decking, paving, coping, screening, drainage and sometimes a retaining wall, in whatever mix your space needs.
That is why we do not publish a per-square-metre rate for it. We would rather quote what your space actually needs than give you a number that only holds for someone else's pool. You get a fixed price in writing after a free site visit, with every element as its own line.
If it helps to anchor: the decking element is priced the same way a normal deck is, and the retaining element the same way a retaining wall is. You can see both of those on the decks and retaining walls pages.
What goes into a pool surround
- Decking. Composite or hardwood, framed to sit level with the coping.
- Paving. Around the wet edge, laid with falls so water runs away from the house rather than towards it.
- Coping. The edge that caps the pool shell. It has to be right, because it is the part everyone touches.
- Screening and privacy. Slatted screens, planters or a small wall.
- Drainage. Splash-out and rainwater both have to go somewhere. Getting this wrong is the most common problem we get called to fix.
- Retaining. Where the pool sits into a slope, a wall usually comes with it.

The thing most people miss
Drainage. A pool surround is a large hard surface that sheds water, sitting next to a hole in the ground. If the falls are wrong, or there is nowhere for the water to go, it ends up under the paving, against the house, or eroding the garden.
We hold a plumbing and drainage licence as well as a builder licence, so the drainage around your pool is designed and installed by the same team that builds the surround. That is not the case with most landscaping outfits.
Common questions
Because it would be misleading. Two pool surrounds the same size can differ by a factor of two depending on the slope, the materials and whether retaining is involved. We would rather measure yours.
No. We do everything around it. If you are having a pool put in, we can work alongside your pool builder and pick up the surround.
Yes. Sunken pavers, water pooling and failed coping are common. Usually the fix starts with the drainage underneath rather than the surface you can see.
Pool fencing is regulated and has to be certified. We can coordinate it as part of the job, and the certification comes from the fencing certifier.
It depends entirely on the mix of elements. We give you a programme with the quote so you know how long the pool is out of action.
